Balancing Powers: What Is the Role of the Courts?
How do courts help our democracy work? Is the judicial branch the "least dangerous branch" that Alexander Hamilton envisioned in 1789? Why are Supreme Court decisions respected, even though the judiciary has neither "sword nor purse"?
The U.S. Supreme Court is increasingly asked to decide cases that involve controversial social and political issues that were not a concern at the founding of our Constitution.
Participants in the 2011 We the People Summer Institute will examine the important role of the courts in our system of shared powers.
