This program is based on the We the People...the Citizen and
the Constitution text and is available for upper elementary,
middle and high school students. Students develop a comprehensive
understanding of the Constitution and Bill of Rights and an appreciation
of the rights and the responsibilities of citizens in our constitutional
democracy. The culminating activity is a simulated Congressional
hearing in which students demonstrate their knowledge of constitutional
issues in historical and contemporary contexts. Community leaders
serve as judges for competitive and classroom based hearings.
At the high school
level, the program features a competitive display of knowledge,
through simulated Congressional hearings on constitutional issues,
among interested classes of high school students in each Congressional
district in Colorado. Winning district-level classes then compete
in the state We the People finals held in December at the State
Capitol.
