July 10, 2014

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

After 12 amazing and rewarding years, the CELD team has decided that the 30th Educating for Citizenship conference, to be held on December 5, 2014, will be the last event planned by our team. Nonetheless, we remain committed to the types of services CELD has provided since 2002. Between now and the December conference, we will be searching for an individual, team, or organization who can serve as Colorado’s go-to center for civic education. This email is the first step in the search process—and we are asking for your help.

To encourage new leaders to continue our work, the CELD Board and staff offer our reserves of $50,000 + to advance this effort. Additionally, individuals and a foundation have pledged an additional $15,000 to revitalize and fulfill CELD's mission. The application lays out the specifications and process for making the award. Please take a look and forward to others who would be interested in designing new approaches to civic education in Colorado. As you will see, we hope to announce the award at the December conference.

I'm sure you will agree that Colorado needs a civic education center to (1) provide opportunities for young people to study, practice, and engage in active democratic citizenship, (2) provide professional development for teachers, (3) create instructional resources, and (4) cultivate partnerships among those committed to civic education. You can play an important role in ensuring that such a center exists by helping us find the individual/group of civic leaders with the passion, skill set, and business plan to respond to Colorado's civic education needs in the 21st Century.

Please know that collaborating with educators and civic leaders like you has been the most rewarding aspect of our work over the past 12 years. We appreciate your dedication to civic education and thank you in advance for your assistance in moving toward the next generation of supporting civic learning in Colorado.
