The Fourteenth Amendment: Historical and Contemporary Perspectives

June 12 – 15, 2007
University of Denver

Cited in more litigation than any other amendment to our Constitution, the Fourteenth Amendment greatly expanded protections of civil rights to all Americans. Debates over the meaning of “equal protection” and “due process of law” in the Fourteenth Amendment have caused controversy since the amendment was ratified in 1868. Interpretations of the Fourteenth Amendment and its significance to current issues were examined in depth by 30 secondary teachers from throughout Colorado – participants in the 2007 We the People Summer Institute.
